She shared with her husband a fine, discriminating taste in art, and their home has long been notable for its beautiful pictures. She had always a keen interest in the arts and particularly literature, and was a wide and sympathetic reader of the best works, both modern and classic. She possessed a charming and gracious personality and unusual gifts as a conversationist. She had lived in Amherst from the time of her marriage in 1857, with the exception of seven winters which were passed in New York, and several long periods of travel and residence abroad. She had undoubtedly entertained at her board more men and women of distinction in the world of literature and affairs than any other householder in the place. She was a woman of rare quality and truly a distinguished citizen of the town, who had made her home for many years one of the notable features of the community. She had been seriously ill for a number of weeks, and for several days her life has been slowly, peacefully fading away. Susan Huntington Gilbert Dickinson, widow of William Austin Dickinson, died at her home, the Evergreens, in Amherst yesterday, in her 83rd year, from heart disease. We see a lot more travel outside of Rome in this part of the series. Saylor keeps to the same formula of well-researched events and placing Gordianus in a prime position to explore events, with a sideline mystery for him to focus on, while still conveying the feeling that this is a younger man. In between The Triumph of Caesar (2008) and Caesar’s Throne (2017), Saylor has written three “Young Gordianus” novels, about his protagonist’s time in Alexandria in his youth. All the “known facts” (which is a troublesome area, as any historian will admit) are reflected in the novels, while Saylor fills in the many blanks with what feels like real human drama. With a unique viewpoint and highly researched material, Saylor deftly presents a version of events that could have been. Throughout the series, Gordianus is constantly on the side-lines of the tumultuous first century BCE, observing the main events. The series starts with Roman Blood, where Gordianus is hired by a young Cicero in his first major case. I’ve mentioned this series a lot in the past but never reviewed it, so I’m now rectifying this omission. I’ve just finished the latest installment (Throne of Caesar). I came across Steven Saylor’s work when my Kindle suggested Roman Blood (I just finished Lindsey Davis’ Falco at the time). Quickly, the documentary’s producers pulled the film from distribution, and Latimer saw her other big 2020 production, the acclaimed CBC series Trickster, cancelled by the network – only for it to later earn 15 Canadian Screen Award nominations (though Latimer herself received none). Inconvenient Indian, one of the most infamous Canadian documentaries ever made that few people have actually seen, is directed by Michelle Latimer, whose career was upended in December, 2020, after the CBC published a feature scrutinizing her Indigenous heritage. Documentary | Chuck Liddell on Dancing with the Stars Part 1 Kill Or Be Killed certainly has a juicy twist.īrubaker had originally conceived of the main character as a middle-aged man with a family who is run down and weary with life. I love everything Tarantino has put out recently.Īnd I especially love a vigilante story with a twist. I loved The Revenger’s Tragedy and elected to study revenge in Elizabethan and Jacobean plays specifically during university. I’ve always loved a good vigilante story. Kill Or Be Killed is a direct and purposeful response to the creators feeling as though there was no justice in the world. And we fantasise about taking justice into our own hands. We really freaking hate it when the justice system fails us.We hate when the bad guys get away with it.We hate seeing other good people being wronged. This must be the heart of the widespread appeal of such a timeless formula. It’s not (just) because I enjoy seeing people hunted down and mercilessly butchered. When it comes to comics and movies, I’m biased heavily in favour of revenge as a subject matter.ī-movies can thrill me if the plot is revenge.īut Kill Or Be Killed ( Amazon) by Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, and Elizabeth Breitweiser is far from B-movie material – it’s a five-star comic book by anyone’s standard.Īnd over the course of reading the first volume, and in the delightfully painful anticipation period of waiting for the second volume to arrive, I came to a conclusion as to why I love vigilante stories. I’ve been racking my brain, trying to discover why I love vigilante stories so much. |
